Sl vs Nz: Test Series Recap

First Test

Sri Lanka hosted New Zealand for a two-match Test series in August 2022. The first match kicked off at the Galle International Stadium, where the hosts won the toss and decided to field first.

New Zealand openers Tom Latham and Will Young started solidly, putting on a 71-run partnership. However, Sri Lanka's bowlers fought back, with Lasith Embuldeniya claiming Young's wicket in the 19th over.

The visitors steadied the ship, but Sri Lankan spinners Ramesh Mendis and Prabath Jayasuriya proved too much to handle.

Second Test

The second Test took place at the P Sara Oval in Colombo, where New Zealand won the toss and elected to bat. The Black Caps posted a massive 554 runs before declaring their innings.

Despite a spirited effort, Sri Lanka could only muster 253 in reply. New Zealand enforced the follow-on, and the hosts showed great resilience in their second innings, scoring 344.

The match ended in a draw, with New Zealand winning the series 1-0.

Sl's Performance

Sri Lanka's batting was a major disappointment in the series. Opener Dimuth Karunaratne struggled to find form, scoring only 35 runs in four innings.

Only Kusal Mendis and Angelo Mathews showed some resistance, with Mendis scoring a century in the first innings of the second Test.

The bowling unit also failed to impress, with Jayasuriya being the only bright spot. The left-arm spinner claimed 12 wickets in the series, including a 5-for in the second Test.

Nz's Performance

New Zealand, on the other hand, displayed their class throughout the series. Captain Kane Williamson led from the front, scoring two centuries in the second Test.

Latham and Young also chipped in with important contributions, while the bowling attack, led by spinner Ajaz Patel, proved to be too strong for Sri Lanka's batsmen.

Overall, New Zealand's victory was well-deserved, and they showed why they are one of the top Test teams in the world.

Conclusion

The Test series between Sri Lanka and New Zealand was a closely contested affair. However, New Zealand’s superior batting and bowling performances ultimately proved to be the difference.

Sri Lanka will need to improve their batting if they want to compete with the world's best teams. New Zealand, on the other hand, will be confident heading into the next Test series against Pakistan.
