In an extraordinary display of batting prowess, Punjab Kings (PBKS) chased down a mammoth 261-run target set by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Eden Gardens on Friday. The win not only secured PBKS two crucial points in the IPL standings but also set a new world record for the highest successful run chase in the history of the tournament.
KKR got off to a blistering start, thanks to blazing half-centuries from openers Sunil Narine and Phil Salt. The duo put on a 120-run partnership for the first wicket, setting the platform for a big total. KKR captain Shreyas Iyer also contributed with a valuable 54 off 35 balls, guiding his team to a massive 261 for six.
However, PBKS showed remarkable resilience and determination in their chase. English batsman Jonny Bairstow was at the heart of the chase, smashing an astounding 122 off just 56 deliveries. His innings included 13 fours and seven towering sixes. Bhanuka Rajapaksa (55 off 33) and Liam Livingstone (53 not out off 31) provided excellent support to Bairstow, as PBKS reached their target with four balls to spare.
The victory was a significant one for PBKS, who moved up to fourth place in the IPL standings. It also highlighted the team's newfound depth and batting firepower, with several players contributing to the historic win.
